Meet Meredith
Well, hey there! My name is Meredith Berg. I'm a dog photographer in case you hadn't noticed all the dogs hanging around here! This post is a little bit about me and how a Georgia girl ended up in Anchorage, Alaska. Interested? Then read on!
Like I said, I am a Georgia girl, born and raised. "So how did you end up in Alaska?" you might ask. Well, it all started with a family trip to Alaska in 1999. We went on a cruise and explored the interior. On our cruise, we went on an excursion where we flew to the top of Mendenhall Glacier to mush dogsleds. What cool parents I have! 8 year old Meredith thought she was going to die from excitement! As it turns out, it made me love Alaska and dogs even more that I already did. My mom says that I told her right then and there that this is what I wanted to do: mush dogs. It seemed pretty impossible for a Georgia girl who didn't own a dog and who had never seen more than two inches of snow in her life.
Fast forward to March of 2014 and where do you think my mom and I are? The Iditarod! We had always wanted to see the race but it was during school and my mom didn't want us to miss that much school I tried to assure her that I would have been perfectly fine with such an arrangement!
My mom and I spent 16 days in Alaska watching the Iditarod. We volunteered at the ceremonial start in Anchorage and at the restart in Willow. We flew from Willow to Rainy Pass Lodge and spent a few days watching dog teams check in, bed down, refuel and then hit the trail again. It was amazing. We came back to Anchorage and spent a few days there before we flew to Nome to watch the finish of the race. At 4 AM, Dallas Seavey won the 42nd Iditarod. I was hooked. I wanted to move to Alaska as soon as I got back home, but the timing wasn't quite right. I had just started a job in Atlanta and didn't know how to get myself to Alaska.
The following year, in 2015, my mom and I came back to Alaska for the Iditarod. It was just as amazing the second year as it was the first! I made a few connections with some employees of Horizon Air. They told me that they were hiring flight attendants specifically to be based in Anchorage. How perfect was that? God certainly does know a thing or two about perfect timing!
I came back to Atlanta and applied for the flight attendant job at Horizon. I quit my job and got hired on at Horizon Air. I went through four weeks of training in Portland and then I moved to Alaska! I've been in Anchorage for almost three years now and I absolutely love it.
God led me to Alaska and it has changed so many things in my life. My photography became focused on the passion that I have always had for dogs. Alaska introduced me to some of the most wonderful people I've ever met, especially my husband. It's shown me mountains, valleys, lakes, streams and the beauty in all of it. I am so thankful for my journey thus far in Alaska, and I can't wait to see what's next!
